Set in the period just after the First Indian War of independence (Sepoy Mutiny) when the British Raj had been firmly established in India J Clude White describe in details his experiences in the Eastern Himalayan states of Sikkim and Bhutan. These experiences cover an almost twenty year period from 1881 when he first arrived in Darjeeling until the end of the nineteenth century.
It is a book that deals so well with these little known region of the Himalaya. Not only does he describe the geographical features but also the historical and cultural background of the people that live there. At the same time he has not forgotten to carefully describe both the flora and fauna of the area, which he most graciously that’s the inhabitants for having carefully noted.
