Title:Fortress Monasteries of the Himalayas: Tibet, Ladakh, Nepal and Bhutan
Remarks:Colour and B&W Illustrations, Maps, Glossary and Index.
Size:185 x 247 mm
From the 7th century AD Buddhism has been influential in the mountain kingdoms of the Himalayas, a region stretching from China, the Tibetan Autonomous Region, through Bhutan and Nepal to northern India. The cultural and architectural unity of this region is expressed in the fortified monasteries that dominate the landscape. This title recreates the dramatic and colourful fortifications created in these mountain kingdoms, and recounts their operational history through the foreign incursions, religious conflicts and civil wars that litter their history, right through to the Tibetan uprising and flight of the Dalai Lama from the Potala Palace in Lhasa in 1959.
